City: New York City
Day: Gun violence prevention policy lawyer at Everytown for Gun Safety
Night: Mom (to both a human baby and a 100-lb fur baby); Stand-up comedy lover
Mornings consist of my husband and I somehow managing to get ourselves ready for work, the dog walked, and the baby ready for daycare. The process is still new for us, and we are trying to streamline it every day. But I always make sure to have solid playtime with the baby -- a giggly baby is definitely a good start to the day.
I drop my daughter off at daycare, which is conveniently on my route to the subway. I read as much news as possible on my phone with the limited service on the subway.
My work is very heavy and emotional. The amount of gun violence in this country is heartbreaking and simply unacceptable. So in addition to trying to tackle as many tasks as I can throughout the day, I also try to take short breaks to keep my head clear. This often takes the form of quickly scrolling through recent pictures of my daughter (and dog) on my phone -- not only does this put a smile on my face, but it also reinforces of one of the many reasons I do this work.
There are lots of decent lunch spots around my office, so I usually pick up lunch with a colleague and we bring it back to our desks to eat. We lovingly refer to one of our favorite sushi spots as "basement sushi" or "cellar sushi." Sounds delicious, right? It surprisingly is.
I hate cooking. Our freezer is stocked with food from Trader Joe's, so I end up eating that almost every night. I'd be eating potato chips for dinner if it weren't for TJ's and a microwave!
A long, hot shower after the baby goes to sleep. So simple, yet so magical.
Every Sunday morning, my husband takes my daughter on a daddy/daughter adventure, which allows me to sleep in a bit. This extra sleep is priceless. We are also a serious pizza family, and we love to try different pizza across the city. Favorites include: Joe's (traditional NY slice), Prince Street Pizza (Sicilian slice with pepperoni), Emily's (fancy pizza; they also have an incredible burger), Joe & Pat's (thin crust vodka pie).
High Brow Ritual
Highlights every few months. I tell myself it's ok because I haven't had a manicure in about four years. Admittedly, one has nothing to do with the other.
Low Brow Ritual
A certain reality show on TLC which I will not name here. Is TLC still short for "The Learning Channel"? If so, that's incredibly misleading...
