Morning Ritual

I’ve always been an early bird but since moving to Florida, I’ve gotten up and out even earlier. Who can resist the beautiful weather in the morning? My usual routine is to make the bed as soon as I get up, turn on The Today Show, shower and get dressed.  I’m trying very hard to limit my news exposure these days, but I can’t miss seeing Savannah, Hoda and Al on a daily basis.  Even though I don’t actually “watch,” having the sounds of Today is very comforting to me.

Breakfast - on the run. I rarely sit down for breakfast, so it’s usually fruit and hard boiled egg whites.  I don’t eat the yolks – but I save them in my freezer for my friend’s dog – who loves them for a snack. If I plan ahead, I might mix in quinoa or rice with my eggs. We don’t drink coffee at our house – just lots of H2O or seltzer.

Many mornings (3-4 times a week), I’m out by 9am for a morning of tennis – matches, lesson, clinic or a social game. That usually keeps me occupied until almost lunchtime.  If I’m not playing tennis or walking the loop in my community, you can find me doing laundry (I LOVE to iron!), or recycling. My New Year’s resolution in 2018 was to reduce our trash, to be aware of what went to the landfill, and to recycle as much as possible.  I admire and learn a lot from Lauren Singer of @trashisfortossers.  The sanitation workers in our neighborhood even asked me what happened because we had so much less trash.  In 2019, my resolution is to try – and it’s really hard – to eliminate as much plastic as possible (reduce vs. just recycle). I started saying no to plastic bags and straws. Next step is paper napkins and paper towels. I even recycle my empty cosmetic / make-up containers at L’Occitane.  They have partnered with Terra Cycle to recycle health and beauty products that cannot be thrown into our blue bins. I try to tell everyone about this - such a great find!

Daytime Ritual

A few days a week, I’m playing mah jongg or canasta with friends. Canasta has really become a favorite!  Otherwise, you can find me running around town or at home playing Martha Stewart. I love to bake – especially my well known chocolate chip mandel bread (sorry, the recipe is a family secret!).  I also enjoy doing crafts, painting, refinishing furniture or sewing (you should see my new computerized sewing machine!)  I’ve taken lots of classes and workshops in and around South Florida and I’m always looking for something new to try. My latest obsession is planting and growing pineapples – my first pineapple should be mature and ready to eat in June/July.  Every afternoon, I read the papers - The New York Times and The Sun Sentinel - before dinner. Always the paper copies. I also rotate mid-week time in our Bal Harbour condo – exploring Miami Beach, Aventura and finding good restaurants for dinner. For me, it’s a stay-cation 60 minutes away. Total relaxation on the ocean!

Dinner Ritual

Oh how times have changed! I used to cook about 4 nights a week – simple, healthy foods – chicken, fish, salads – a lot on the BBQ. But, when you live in a Country Club and have an annual Food and Beverage minimum, you are somewhat forced to eat at the Club venues. So that covers lunch, dinner and leftovers for the next day. I’m down to 1-2 nights cooking – maximum!

Night Ritual

Out to dinner covers a few nights. We have a subscription to The Broward Center for travelling Broadway shows, and we enjoy playing mixed doubles canasta.  I’m not into any of the TV/Netflix/Amazon series this season – we’ve watched The Crown, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Suits. My husband is an NBA addict (Knicks season tickets for over 40 years!) and has an MLB TV package. I like sitting in our office at night and catching up on Instagram stories and Facebook with the TV on in the background.  The evening is also when I do my damage - shopping online!

Highbrow Ritual

Selling Mah Jongg cards for The Pap Corps. The Pap Corps supports Cancer Research at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami.

Low Brow Ritual

Cheap milk chocolate – nothing fancy for me. I cannot be tempted by any dark chocolate!

Ritual Fail

Getting rid of old clothes. I hold on to clothes for too long and for all the wrong reasons. Lauren still has one of my favorite zip-up sweatshirts from when I was a teenager!
